MAIN PREDICTION: HOME WIN
Botafogo travelled all the way to CS Alagoano in the league last weekend and won. It was their fifth victory in the last seven league fixtures, along with two losses. They are producing brilliant results under manager Eduardo Barroca, with their latest success even arriving without goalkeeper Roberto Fernandez. The team now have 15 points from their eight league matches.
Gremio played against Fortaleza on neutral ground in the league last weekend and won 1-0, with the only goal arriving in the final minute of play through Pepe after the visitors had gone one man down 17 minutes earlier. It was only their second league win of the season, having drawn twice and lost four times, and will be considered a hugely important result. They have now moved away from the relegation zone, with eight points.
Nine of Botafogo’s 15 points in the league have come at home, with their only official home league defeat taking place on neutral ground against leaders Palmeiras, who are still unbeaten. Gremio, in contrast, have failed to win all of their league matches as visitors (two draws, two losses, one of the matches played on neutral ground) and have scored only two league goals on the road. I can’t see them pulling off a surprise here. This one should go Botafogo’s way.
SECOND PREDICTION: CORRECT SCORE – 1-0
Botafogo’s last three official home league matches (one of which took place at a neutral venue) have ended with a 1-0 scoreline, twice in their favour. Considering Gremio have only conceded four goals in their four away league games(one of the matches took place at a neutral ground), I think another 1-0 Botafogo victory could be on the cards.
HEAD TO HEAD
Gremio thrashed Botafogo 4-0 at home in the league last season but lost 2-1 earlier when travelled to Rio de Janeiro in league action. The last four league encounters have been won by the respective home side - twice by Gremio and twice by Botafogo.
