Match Time：6/10/2019 06:00 Monday (GMT+8)
Goalkeeper Agenor will return for Fluminense this weekend after missing their last league match due to suspension. However, midfielder Airton will be absent after receiving a red card last time out. Both Matheus Ferraz and Yony Gonzalez suffered foot injuries in the last round and will be absent.
Flamengo will be only one player short of a full squad this weekend. However, their big news is the signing of Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus, who will make his league debut in the dugout here.
Suspended: Airton, Nino
Injured/unavailable: Digao (tibia), Mascarenhas (elbow), Leo Santos (calf), Paulo Ricardo (hamstring); Matheus Ferraz, Yony Gonzalez (both foot)
Injured/unavailable: Rhodolfo (knee)
MAIN PREDICTION: AWAY WIN
Fluminense travelled to Athletico Paranaense in the league last weekend and were defeated 3-0. It was an awful performance from them as they watched the hosts taking over every section of the pitch, with the away side already 2-0 down by the 35th minute. Defensive midfielder Airton was sent off right before Athletico Paranaense’s second goal due to a violent tackle, and Fluminense lost two more players to foot injuries – Matheus Ferraz in the first half and Yony Gonzalez in the second. Athletico Paranaense managed to squeeze in a third goal six minutes from time, sealing Fluminense’s fifth defeat in the league this season. Only a superior goal difference over CS Alagoano sees them outside the relegation zone - but their six points from two wins and five losses in the league is poor. They made a trip to Cruzeiro for the second leg of their round-of-16 cup tie in midweek and left with a 2-2 draw. Having lost on penalties after a 3-3 draw on aggregate, they were knocked out of the competition.
Flamengo hosted Fortaleza last time out and clinched an inspiring 2-0 league win under their caretaker manager. They produced a huge display as they dismantled the visitors with 21 chances and 70% of ball possession. Striker Gabriel Barbosa netted a brace, scoring one goal in each half, after completing two Giorgian De Arrascaeta assists. They left no room for Fortaleza to try to pose a threat and walked off the pitch with a solid and important victory, which allowed them to jump into fourth place with 13 points. They hosted Corinthians in the second leg of their round-of-16 cup tie in midweek, winning 1-0. Having beaten them 2-0 on aggregate, they have now reached the quarter-final stage of the competition.
Flamengo have won three out of their last four league matches, losing one, while Fluminense have registered the exact opposite results, having lost three and won one of their last four. In addition, the arrival of experienced Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus is bound to give the visitors a boost here - and I can see them taking full advantage of the hosts’ three major absentees. An away win is surely on the cards.
SECOND PREDICTION: HILO – HIGH
The sides involved here have two of the best scoring records in the league: Fluminense have 12 league goals on their tally and Flamengo have scored 13 in the league so far. Adding to that, Fluminense have the worst defensive record in the league, with 15 goals, and have conceded six goals in their last two league matches. I expect to see a high-scoring affair.
HEAD TO HEAD
Flamengo won both league encounters against Fluminense last term, beating them 2-0 on neutral ground and 3-0 at home.
