Match Time:7/11/2019 03:00 Thursday(GMT+8)
As for both Nigeria and South Africa advancing to the last 8 of the African Nations Cup with entertaining wins in the round of 16, thus when they meet each other in the quarter final, it’ll certainly be an eye-catching matchup. As for South Africa, they showed no fear against the host in the last 16 encounter, it is worth mentioning that whether it is attacking, counter-attack or defending after losing possession, the team remained to play on a extremely high tempo throughout the game, it even gives me a bit of sense of Premier League football, which at the end they managed to score from a counter-attack and sealed a shock win over Egypt, which the gameplay and the score itself was a surprise to many football fans. Judging from the last game’s performance, South Africa are physically strong, as the players keep on running in such a high tempo game, but when we look at South Africa’s performance during the group stage, we could get a bit puzzled by it, as out of those 3 matches, they only managed to beat Namibia and lost the other 2 games against Morocco and Cote d'Ivoire. The group stage results showed they have not been at their best consistently, and the fact that the physical demand of their last match was too great, which could come back to haunt them in the quarter final.
Nigeria beat Cameroon 3:2 in the round of 16, as both sides produced a rare goal feast, but one of the focuses seems to be the presence of legends Nwankwo Kanu and Samuel Eto'o, given both teams have wasted numerous scoring chances in the game, fans could be forgiven for wishing their legends are still playing. As I have stated before, African players’ finishing ability is rather weak, but Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo is one of the few exceptions, as his two goals helped the Super Eagles to knock out the defending Champion. Nigeria’s performance in the tournament so far have been fairly consistent, as they recorded 3 wins and 1 loss so far, which the side they lost to was Madagascar, who have now qualified to the last 8. When it comes to the eliminating rounds, consistency is the key for winning, therefore I think Nigeria can defeat South Africa to advance to the semi-final.
