MAIN PREDICTION: DRAW
Santos clinched a huge result in the league last weekend when beating Ceara 1-0 away from home. The hosts started the game playing slightly better, but they had a goal disallowed by VAR in the first half. Santos then turned things around after half time. Midfielder Carlos Sanchez assisted striker Eduardo Sasha for the winning goal in the 52nd minute and their defence showed great composure to resist the hosts’ efforts in the dying moments. It was Santos’ second win in their last four league matches (one draw, one loss) and they are now in third place with 14 points, five points behind leaders Palmeiras.
Atletico Mineiro produced another superb display in the league last time out when they saw off CS Alagoano with a 4-0 thrashing at home. Captain Fabio Santos opened the scoring from the spot in the 20th minute and playmaker Juan Cazares hit a brilliantly taken free kick to double their lead only three minutes later. In the second half, the team continued to put pressure on the visitors’ backline and scored another two goals: winger Yimmi Chara slotted in the third in the 50th minute and defensive midfielder Adilson sealed the victory with 15 minutes to go. It was their fifth win in the league this season and they are sitting in second, one point above Santos.
When it comes to their league form, the teams are close in the rankings, but Atletico Mineiro are in slightly better shape here, having won two and lost one of their last three league fixtures, as opposed to one win, one draw and one defeat in Santos’ last three. However, Santos are still unbeaten at home with two wins and one draw in league action. The sides have similar playing styles and neither of them are expected to have any significant absences, so I think they will cancel each other out here.
SECOND PREDICTION: FIRST HALF HAD – DRAW
Both sides have been drawing at half time in four of their seven league matches. In fact, all three of Atletico Mineiro’s away league matches have been level at the interval while three of Santos’ five home league goals have been scored in the second half. I predict a first-half draw here.
HEAD TO HEAD
Santos have won three and lost one of their last four league meetings with Atletico Mineiro. The latter defeated Santos 3-1 at home in the league last season before being beaten 3-2 away.
