MAIN PREDICTION: HOME WIN
Santos welcomed Atletico Mineiro at home in the league last weekend and won 3-1. It was their third league match in a row in which they had been unbeaten (two wins, one draw) and their second consecutive league victory, so they have been shining recently under manager Jorge Sampaoli. The team are now in a solid spot inside the top four, sitting in second place with 17 points.
Corinthians had two weeks to rest before their away league match against Cruzeiro last weekend, but they only managed to draw 0-0 against their struggling opponents. Although the team are unbeaten in the last six league games they have failed to win half of them (three wins, three draws). Corinthians have also been uninspiring when it comes to scoring goals this season, with only seven in seven league matches. Another mid-table finish seems inevitable if they don’t become more efficient up front soon.
Santos have been playing better than Corinthians and they still have unfinished business with the visiting side, after being knocked out by this week’s opponents earlier this year in the Campeonato Paulista semi-finals. I expect Santos to play their hearts out to book this win. Considering Corinthians have only won one away league game this season (two draws, one loss) - and that was against Athletico Paranaense’s reserves - a home win looks likely.
SECOND PREDICTION: HILO – LOW
Corinthians may not have a strong attack, but they do have a strong defensive record with only four league goals conceded. Santos have scored only 11 goals in eight league matches this season, so I don’t think we will see many total goals here.
HEAD TO HEAD
Santos defeated Corinthians 1-0 at neutral ground in the league last season and drew 1-1 away from home.
